Overview & Traditional Uses

Derived from the Greek glykos (sweet) and rhiza (root), Licorice is one of the oldest and most widely used botanicals in global herbal history. Revered across traditional Ayurvedic medicine (Yashtimadhu), Traditional Chinese Medicine (Gan Cao, the "Great Harmonizer"), and Western folk herbalism, Licorice Root was historically placed in Egyptian royal tombs and brewed by Roman centurions for stamina. Naturally rich in glycyrrhizin—a compound up to 50 times sweeter than table sugar—along with soothing flavonoids and polysaccharides, Licorice Root is celebrated as a supreme demulcent, adrenal support ally, and herbal blend harmonizer.

  • Soothes Mucous Membranes & Throat Comfort: A premier demulcent rich in soothing mucilage that coats, moistens, and cools irritated throat tissues, calms dry coughs, and supports the delicate lining of the stomach and digestive tract.

  • Metaphysical & Folklore Uses: Ruled by Venus and the Water element. Associated with love drawing, sweet persuasion, emotional harmony, fidelity, and spiritual protection. Used in ritual attraction bags, sweetening jars, and harmony brews to sweeten difficult situations, bind loving relationships, and soften harsh energies.

  • Harmonizing Herbal Blends & Adrenal Tonics: Used as a universal herbal harmonizer that balances the flavors and actions of other herbs while traditionally supporting adrenal gland endurance and sustained energy.

Brewing & Preparation

  • Decoction Method: Add 1 teaspoon of cut root to 10–12 oz of water in a small pot. Bring to a boil, cover, and gently simmer for 10–15 minutes. Strain and sip warm. (Because of its potent natural sweetness, a small amount goes a long way!)

  • Throat & Chest Soothing Tea: Simmer alongside marshmallow root, cinnamon bark, and ginger root for a rich, coating seasonal brew.

  • Pairs Well With: Ginger Root, Cinnamon Bark, Marshmallow Root, Peppermint, Dandelion Root, Elderberry.

Precautions & Storage

  • Precautions: Contains natural glycyrrhizin, which can cause sodium retention and potassium loss with prolonged or high-dose use. Avoid use if you have hypertension (high blood pressure), kidney disease, heart failure, or hypokalemia. Avoid use during pregnancy and nursing. Not recommended for daily therapeutic consumption exceeding 4–6 consecutive weeks without a break. Consult your healthcare provider prior to use if taking prescription medications, especially diuretics, corticosteroids, or blood pressure drugs.

  • Storage: Store sealed in an airtight container in a cool, dark, dry pantry away from heat and moisture to protect its natural sweetness and active saponins.
